BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The Shawenim Abinoojii Community’s Program is currently accepting applications for Winnipeg-based Support and Respite Workers to provide supports for our foster homes currently under evacuation due to forest fire. We require individuals to provide relief and support to caregivers providing care for up to four (4) children with varying needs, primarily from the ages of 0 to 12 years. Shifts will be completed within the evacuee accommodations with direction and support provided by the CSH Case Management and Support Teams. These positions require training, education and/or experience in the helping field. Candidates with knowledge of Anishinaabe culture, wellness and healing are strongly encouraged to apply. The successful applicants will work alongside the foster parent to provide care for the children and reduce the impact of evacuation.

DUTIES:

  • Support the Foster Parent in providing day-to-day caring for the child(ren); this includes ensuring physical, mental, spiritual and emotional needs of the children are responded to.
  • Act as a caregiving team with the House Parent to maintain a nurturing and predictable home environment.
  • Be a healthy role model and source of guidance for the development of child daily life and social skills.
  • Promote and support the development of personal identity and culture through engaging with community members and activities.
  • Support the operation of the home through providing light housekeeping, shopping, or other relevant tasks as requested by the House Parent.
  • Maintain clear and concise file recordings.
  • Provide incident reports as necessary.
  • Attend all requisite training provided by or offered through Shawenim Abinoojii.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Prior experience in the helping field.
  • Strong communication skills, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Ability to work together in a team setting.
  • Ability to speak Anishinaabe is preferred and considered an asset.
  • Must have a Valid class 5 driver’s license and willingness to travel.
  • Must provide a current satisfactory criminal record (including Vulnerable Sector), Child Abuse Registry and Prior Contact Checks as a condition of employment.

WORK SCHEDULE: Hours will be assigned based on the needs of the children in the home.
